FREDERICTON -- The vice-president of the New Brunswick Law Society says the planned closure of four courthouses in the province is irresponsible and will limit access to justice by people on low incomes.
Robert Creamer says the planned closures should be cancelled.
The province's Liberal government announced in its March budget that it plans to close courthouses in St. Stephen, Sussex, Grand Manan and Grand Falls.
Creamer says the closures will mean that some people will have to travel a great distance, with an added expense, to access justice.
Creamer says he is particularly concerned for women in transition homes or similar facilities who often have little or no assets.
The government said the closures are part of an effort to cut spending, but Creamer says the law society should have been consulted.
