Two teens are facing charges of attempted murder after a Moncton cab driver was allegedly stabbed and robbed Wednesday.
Police say a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, both of Moncton, were arrested without incident late yesterday in Hillsborough.
Kody Bryant MacPhail and the youth both appeared in Moncton Provincial Court this morning.
The charges stem from an early morning attack that left a Moncton taxi driver in hospital.
"He suffered serious injuries to the upper body," Const. Damien Theriault with the Codiac RCMP told CTV News Wednesday. "It's still under investigation as to what exactly caused the…injuries."
But the victim's co-workers say he was stabbed, and this has again raised the question about the safety of taxi drivers.
Police say they received a report around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday that a cab driver was robbed in the parking lot of a gas station at 500 Hillsborough Road in Riverview.
They say the driver picked up two men in Riverview and a fight broke out along the way. When the driver pulled over at the garage, which was closed at the time, he was allegedly attacked and robbed by the men in his cab.
The suspects then took off in the taxi, a gold-coloured 2004 Chrysler Caravan with the White Cab company, and the driver called for help.
He was taken to hospital with serious, but non life-threatening injuries. His co-workers say he is in intensive care after surgery.
Police arrested the two teens and recovered the victim's vehicle in the Riverside-Albert area Wednesday afternoon.
Claude-Pierre Gagne of the Taxi Advisory Committee says drivers are relieved arrests have been made, but the incident has stunned his co-workers.
"Safety is always on the mind of taxi drivers now…an event like that, the drivers are in shock…that it occurred to one of theirs, their fellow worker," says Gagne.
In addition to attempted murder, the pair are also facing theft charges.
