Canadian airline WestJet has announced it will be offering daily non-stop flights from Nova Scotia to Scotland starting next spring.

The company made the announcement at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport Friday morning.

The daily flights from Halifax to Glasgow will operate on a Boeing Next-Generation 737-700 series aircraft. The service will be offered between May 29, 2015 and Oct. 23, 2015.

The flights will leave Toronto, touch down in Halifax, and then continue on to Scotland.

"This year's launch of service to Dublin has proved popular with existing transatlantic flyers and with new guests alike, thanks to market growth driven by drastically reduced fares," said Bob Cummings, a vice-president with WestJet.

"Fares to Glasgow will be as much as fifty per cent off existing prices, so we'll once again grow the market.”

WestJet said it expects the new flight will be popular with Nova Scotians visiting family and friends, Canadians looking for a uniquely Scottish experience, and with United Kingdom residents travelling to Canada.

"Nova Scotia and Scotland have always had close ties and this connection between Halifax and Glasgow only brings us closer," said Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil. "Whether it's a business traveler looking for opportunities to export our goods and services to Europe, or tourists who now have an easier way to experience Nova Scotia's hospitality, this link will help drive our economy forward."

The Scotland-bound flight, WS 30, was numbered in honour of St. Andrew's Day, which falls on Nov. 30.

The flight will take about five hours and 15 minutes, which is roughly the same amount of time as a flight from Halifax to Calgary.

Flights will leave Toronto at 6:10 p.m., touch down in Halifax at 10:45 p.m. and arrive in Glasgow at 8 a.m.

Flights will depart Glasgow at 9:30 a.m., land in Halifax at 11:45 a.m. and arrive in Toronto at 2:30 p.m.

A basic one-way flight from Halifax to Scotland will cost roughly $259.00.
