As Maritimers gather at cenotaphs around the region to observe Remembrance Day on Saturday, the majority of businesses will be closed.
In Prince Edward Island, Remembrance Day is a stat holiday and in New Brunswick it's a stat prescribed day of rest. In Nova Scotia, the day has its own legislation called the Remembrance Day Act. Since the holiday falls on a weekend, you’ll see some closure on Monday, too.
There is no school on Monday in all three Maritime provinces. Government offices and banks will be closed. There will also be no mail delivery.
Major shopping malls like the Halifax Shopping Centre will be closed Saturday for Remembrance Day, will be open on Monday.
Emergency rooms, drug stores, gas stations and restaurants are allowed to operate on Saturday. In Nova Scotia, alcohol can only be sold and served after 12 p.m.
The blood donor clinic in Halifax is open on both Saturday and Monday.
There will be no public transit service in Fredericton on Saturday. A regular schedule will resume Monday.
Halifax Transit will operate on a holiday schedule Saturday, with free rides for veterans and military personnel.
But of course, if there's somewhere you're hoping to go on either days, it’s important to call ahead and confirm.
