A 20-person shelter opened its doors in Miramichi, N.B., this week.

Miramichi Housing Solutions will operate the new centre at 273 King George Highway, according to a news release from the provincial government. The shelter will offer sleeping accommodations, personal hygiene facilities, hot refreshments, snacks, light breakfast and a spot to recharge electronics.

“Each community across our province has unique needs, and that is why working together across all levels of government, and in the community, is imperative,” said Social Development Minister Cindy Miles in the release.

The shelter will be open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. seven days a week. It will also be open 24 hours a day during extreme weather.

The government will re-evaluate the space for possible use as a long-term shelter in the spring.

Anyone dealing with homelessness can call 211 for information on services.
