Recount confirms N.S. Liberal leader's seat loss in election
A recount confirmed Nova Scotia Liberal Leader Zach Churchill lost his riding by less than 20 votes in the recent provincial election.
Churchill, who represented the Yarmouth riding since 2010, initially lost the race to Progressive Conservative candidate Nick Hilton by 14 votes on Nov. 26; the recount determined Churchill lost by 16 votes.
Churchill requested the recount, according to a news release from Elections Nova Scotia. The final tally was 3,663 votes for Hilton and 3,647 votes for the Liberal leader.
Nova Scotia NDP candidate Gillian Rowley lost three votes in the recount (landing at a total of 208) while Green Party candidate Adam Randall remained at 62.
Another recount will be conducted for the Annapolis riding on Tuesday. In that race, Progressive Conservative candidate David Bowlby beat Liberal Carman Kerr by seven votes.
Elections Nova Scotia says automatic recounts are triggered when the number of votes separating the top candidate from the others is less than 10.
