A memorial is growing at the location where two teenagers were killed and a third sent to hospital when a car went off the highway and rolled Friday night.

Chad Alder, 17, was a student at Tantramar Regional High School in Port Elgin, N.B., while 18-year-old Colby Callender was a former student. Both died at the scene.

Jason Bourque, 16, was sent to hospital where he underwent surgery, but remains in critical condition.

Family friend Cora Cartwright heard the news over the phone Saturday morning.

“I sat down and she proceeded to tell me that there was an accident and Chad and Colby were dead, and Jason was in the hospital,” said Cartwright.

Cartwright says Alder was one of the first people she met when she moved to Port Elgin seven years ago.

“He was a good kid all around, actually,” she said. “He had his minutes but, hey, don't we all.”

The car the teenagers were travelling in left Highway 16 around 8 p.m. Police say the cause of the crash remains unknown.

“If anybody witnessed this collision please come forward because we want to talk to as many people as possible who have any information on this,” said Sgt. Paul Gagne of South East District RCMP. “There was a loss of human life and there's nothing more important that police officers investigate.”

Grief counsellors attended Tantramar Regional High School and remained there on Monday.

“Yesterday when the schools were open we not only had students coming, but we had families coming so that's a strength within our school system and our communities,” said John Tingley with the Anglophone East School District.
