WAKEFIELD, N.B. - A 17-year-old New Brunswick youth is dead after a single-car crash on a rural highway and a passenger remains in hospital with serious injuries.

Police say the 17-year-old driver, from Florenceville-Bristol, died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash late Saturday night.

Police say a 16-year-old boy from Florenceville-Bristol who was injured in the crash is in critical condition at Saint John Regional Hospital.

The car left Highway 103 near Wakefield, hit a tree and landed in a nearby ravine.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, but police say neither of the young men were wearing seatbelts.
