A 33-year-old Campbellton man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a 48-year-old Val d’Amour man.

Steve Lévesque appeared in Campbellton provincial court Monday morning. In addition to the murder charge, he faces charges of using a firearm in the commission of an offence, pointing a firearm, wearing a disguise while committing an offence, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and careless use of a firearm.

The charges come after police responded to a break-and-enter at a home on chemin Val-d’Amour shortly before 4 a.m. on Aug. 12. Police say a man was arrested in connection with the incident a short time later.

Police were called to another home on the same road around 8 a.m. When police arrived they discovered a body inside the home.

Police say the man had been shot and his death has been ruled a homicide. The victim has been identified as Denis LeBlanc.

Lévesque has been remanded into custody and was sent for a 30-day psychiatric evaluation.

He is due back in court on Sept. 15.
