The RCMP are investigating the fatal shooting of a family pet in Colpitts Settlement, N.B.

Police say the dog’s owners found the pet lying lifeless on the ground when they arrived home from work shortly after 4 p.m. Monday.

They had last seen the German Shepherd and Labrador mix alive when they left their Synton Lane home that morning.

Police believe the dog was shot sometime between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday while the owners were at work.

They say an autopsy is expected to be performed to determine the cause of death.

The New Brunswick SPCA is assisting police in the investigation.
