After years of fighting to preserve the historic icon, the Terence Bay Lighthouse Committee now officially owns the lighthouse in Terence Bay, N.S.

Committee President Laszlo Bone made the surprise announcement Sunday at the community fire hall.

The committee has been trying to preserve the lighthouse since 1999 and Parks Canada granted it heritage status last year.

Bone says he’s very excited about the development, but that there is lots of work to be done.

“We had a lot of difficulties with access. One of the conditions receiving the lighthouse ownership is that we build a pathway over a certain marsh,” says Bone.

The group says a number of people have already volunteered to help create that pathway, but they’re always looking for more helping hands.
