HALIFAX -- A doctor from Pugwash, N.S., has had an interim suspension placed on his medical licence after being charged with sexual assault following an RCMP investigation.

Police say 63-year-old Tim Fashoranti was arrested Tuesday without incident and later released.

He is scheduled to appear in Amherst Provincial Court on Jan. 11.

Investigators say there may be additional alleged victims and are asking the public to contact them if they have information.

"At this point, we have the one victim that has come forward," said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Lisa Croteau. "We're asking due to his position in the community that Mr. Fashoranti has, we're asking that if anyone else has become a victim, or knows of someone who may be a victim, to come forward to police."

Police first received a complaint on July 31 about a sexual assault in the Springhill, N.S., area.

Croteau confirmed to CTV News that the alleged victim is an adult female, but would not say whether she is a patient.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons announced the suspension after holding an emergency meeting of its investigations committee Thursday. It is effective at midnight Thursday.

The college has previously disciplined Fashoranti. It found he had engaged in an inappropriate examination of a female patient. He was found guilty of professional misconduct.

As a condition of his medical licence, Fashoranti had to have a practice monitor who is a licenced health professional with him when seeing patients.

In a statement, the alleged victim says she is relieved a charge has been laid and hopes justice will be served.
