HALIFAX -- Nova Scotia farmers can now apply for provincial funding to build wildlife fences around their crops.

Agriculture Minister Keith Colwell announced Friday that funding will cover half of eligible costs, to a maximum of $115,000.

That will mostly include dual or 2.4-metre high fences to keep deer out.

The offer is part of a $1.6-million initiative, the cost of which is shared 60-40 between the federal and provincial governments.

The deadline to apply for funding is May 15.
