CAPE BRETON, N.S. -- A Nova Scotia man has died after a personal watercraft vehicle overturned Wednesday morning on Lake Ainslie in Cape Breton.

Inverness District RCMP said in a statement that they responded to a call shortly after 9 a.m. about an incident near a campground along the lake.

An unidentified 58-year-old man from Port Hawkesbury, N.S., was found unresponsive in the water, police said.

RCMP Sgt. Andrew Joyce said the man is believed to have been using a jet ski at the time of the incident.

"He was alone ... and he was operating the vehicle about 100 metres, or slightly less than 100 metres, from the shoreline," Joyce said.

Police said the man was wearing a life-vest when the incident occurred.

First responders attended to him, but he was declared dead at the scene.

Joyce said the police investigation is ongoing, but that the RCMP does not suspect foul play.

"Although it happened in the water, we can't assume that it was a drowning due to the circumstances of this here case," he said.
