A young man has pleaded guilty to charges of impaired driving causing death or bodily harm after two people died in a car crash last year.
Anthony Lloyd Gregory Cox of Beaverbank, N.S., made his court appearance on Wednesday.
Danielle Hudson, 22, and Greg Goulding, 21, died on Oct. 18, 2015 when their vehicle left the road and rolled several times.
Family members of the victims also appeared in court.
“This is a group of friends who've known each other for a long time,” said Anissa Alridge of MADD Canada. "There were, that night, four friends in the car, but there were many other friends who were affected when there's a death, in this case two deaths."
There were many tears on both sides of courtroom, and even some comforting of the accused by a friend of the deceased.
“Everybody loses,” said Alridge. “This is a horrific situation. Two lives lost, several lives impacted."
There were nine counts against Cox. The other six will likely be withdrawn upon sentencing.
He will be sentenced early next year.
“For us to get what is called a pre-sentence report, and it's been put over until January 10, and on that date we expect we'll be sentencing him," said Crown prosecutor Melanie Perry.
Perry says she remains astonished by how many of these cases cross her desk.
“I had 14 impaired driving files on my docket today,” she said. “Fourteen files, and it wasn't a busy day in there."
