PICTOU, N.S. - A police officer in Nova Scotia faces charges of assault and property damage in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred while he was on duty.

Police say the charges against Sgt. Paul Matthew Cameron of the Stellarton Police Service were laid Tuesday in Pictou provincial court.

He was charged after a two-week investigation by the major crime unit of the New Glasgow Police.

In a statement, the New Glasgow police department says the charges relate to an alleged incident in Trenton on Feb. 15.

Police spokesman Const. Ken MacDonald says no details of the incident are being released as the matter remains under investigation.

MacDonald says Cameron, who's been suspended, has been a member of the Stellarton force for about three years.

He is due back in court on April 23.
