The RCMP are investigating a house fire that claimed the life of a 65-year-old man in Collingwood, N.S.

Police and fire departments from Collingwood, Oxford and Springhill responded to the home on Wyvern Road shortly after midnight Thursday.

Police say the home was already engulfed in flames when emergency crews arrived on scene.

A dog was rescued from the burning home but efforts to locate the resident were unsuccessful.

An RCMP cadaver dog was brought to the scene later Thursday morning. After searching through the debris, the cadaver dog and handler found human remains.

The medical examiner’s office is working to confirm the man’s cause of death and identity.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
