FREDERICTON -- Former New Brunswick premier Brian Gallant says he's looking forward to a new chapter in his life, as he steps down as leader of the province's Liberal party.
An interim leader will be chosen by the party caucus Tuesday.
Gallant announced his intention to resign in November after his party failed to form a minority government in the weeks following the tight Sept. 24 provincial election.
The 36-year-old Gallant says he believes he was able to make a difference in the province.
He became Liberal leader in 2012, and premier in 2014.
Rene Ephestion, who leads the New Brunswick Liberal Multicultural Inclusion Commission, has announced plans to seek the leadership when a convention is held June 22 in Saint John.
Former House of Commons sergeant-at-arms Kevin Vickers is seen as a potential candidate.
Vickers is retiring next month as Canada's ambassador to Ireland, and has said he won't offer any comment on a possible political bid until he returns to New Brunswick.
