Students across the Maritimes have enjoyed plenty of snow days this winter, but now parents are wondering if the lost time will be made up.

Schools in the Fredericton area were closed for the second day in a row after heavy snowfall overnight left roads clogged Tuesday morning.

“I’ve heard some people say that they could tack on another week at the end of the school year,” says Fredericton resident Sophie Levesque.

“I’m sure the kids wouldn’t like that very much but I guess they’ll have to do what they need to do to keep up or catch up.”

Parent Ann LeBlanc says she hopes her sons are getting the education they need and that a long list of snow days isn’t her only concern.

“A friend of mine pointed out yesterday on Facebook that there’s parent-teacher interviews next week, which will take them out of school another day. There is another PD day scheduled at the end of, I guess, before the Easter break,” says LeBlanc.

In Nova Scotia, some school districts have lost as many as a dozen instructional days. On Prince Edward Island, Tuesday was the fifth consecutive snow day.

New Brunswick students have lost anywhere from six to eleven days, depending on the school district. Despite that, there are no plans to extend the school year in New Brunswick.

“Our teachers are resilient, they’re resourceful, innovative and they do a great job in ensuring our children have and receive the necessary information that they need to succeed,” says New Brunswick Premier David Alward.
