HALIFAX -- A 46-year-old man from Bigney, Nova Scotia is facing charges of multiple firearm offences after police say he shot a 21-year-old man while attempting to euthanize his dog with a handgun.

Pictou County RCMP say at 8:19 p.m. on Jan. 16, police responded to a report of a discharged firearm resulting in injury at a home in Bigney, N.S.

Police say a 46-year-old man tried to use a handgun to euthanize his dog, which had bitten several people, but missed the dog and shot a 21-year-old man who was also inside the home.

Police searched the residence and seized 29 long guns and 9 handguns.

The 46-year-old man was arrested at the scene and later released on conditions. He is scheduled to appear virtually in Pictou Provincial Court on March 29 to face multiple firearm offences.

The 21-year old victim was taken to hospital and released with minor injuries.

The dog survived and has been seized by Animal Control.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
