Halifax Regional Police say that investigators could be providing an update in the coming days on one or two of the recent shooting incidents in the Halifax area.

“They're actively investigating almost 24 hours, seven days a week on anything new that comes in,” said Const. Carol McIsaac of Halifax Regional Police. “We implore the public, if they know anything at all, to contact us or Crime Stoppers."

Joseph Douglas Cameron, 20, was killed on a residential street at the end of March. Then a series of back-to-back shootings resulted in the deaths of Tyler Richards, Naricho Clayton and Daverico Downey – all young black men under the age of 30.

No charges have been laid in any of their deaths.

There have been 18 shooting incidents in the Halifax area this year. The latest happened on a quiet North Preston street early Sunday morning.

A 20-year-old man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

While police continue to work the cases, some believe the attention surrounding the violence isn't particularly helpful.

“We're a close-knit community,” said youth worker Colter Simmonds. “Every time something happens, we're all touched by it because we know each other.”

Simmonds says media outlets should consider impressionable young minds when covering the violence.

"I believe that the more the kids see the negative things that happen in the community over and over on the news, it just starts to paint a picture of the community,” said Simmonds.

While police continue to ask for information, they insist progress is being made.

"We're following up on all leads that are coming in,” said Const. McIsaac. “We're hopeful that within the next 24 to 48 hours that we may have an update on one or two of the homicides."
