Police are remaining tight-lipped about a death at the Saint John Regional Hospital but they admit the case is unusual.

Investigators arrived at the hospital shortly after midnight Wednesday after receiving a report of a suspicious death.

The hospital will only confirm that there is an active police investigation underway on the premises.

"Saint John Police Department Major Crime Unit is investigating a suspicious death that resulted from a call to the Saint John Regional Hospital at 12:20 this morning," says Sgt. Glenn Hayward of the Saint John Police Department.

Police are not saying if the victim was a patient at the hospital and the person's age and gender is also being withheld.

When asked if an arrest has been made, or if a suspect is being questioned, police responded with a "no comment" and for now, the department is taking no further questions.

"At this time, because of rules of evidence and procedural fairness, no other information can be divulged," says Sgt. Hayward.

Police say more information may be released tomorrow.

In the meantime, a spokesperson says the investigation is having no impact on operations at the hospital.
