DARTMOUTH -- Halifax Regional Police are investigating a brazen daytime shooting that left a teen injured.

Police responded to a weapons call on Courtney Road in Dartmouth's north end just before 11 a.m. Tuesday.

When they arrived, officers found a teenage boy suffering from a gunshot wound.

"I saw him," said neighbour Dorothy Goodall. "They had him wrapped up in a blanket and strapped in, so, he must have been hurt badly."

Goodall says she has lived in the area for more than 30 years and that the neighbourhood is quiet.

The area was closed to traffic for several hours while police processed the scene.

Forensic identification officers used metal detectors to search the area and the K9 unit was also called to in help investigators look for clues.

Police are saying very little about the incident, and they won't disclose the age of the teen victim, but they do confirm he was shot in the leg.

"At this point, we believe the injuries to be non-life threatening," said Halifax Regional Police spokesperson Const. John MacLeod. "As far as the incident goes, at this point, it's still early stages of the investigation and our folks are on scene looking into the specifics of that now."

Police won't say if they believe the shooting was random or targeted. They also won't say if anyone is in custody -- or even if they have any suspects in the case.

"Because of the early stages of the investigation, they're still trying to determine exactly what it was that happened this morning," MacLeod said.

Anyone who has information about the incident is asked to contact Halifax Regional Police.
