HALIFAX -- Police are investigating the death of a woman in central Halifax.
Halifax Regional Police responded to a report of suspicious circumstances at a home in the 6200 block of Willow Street shortly after 7:30 a.m Tuesday.
Officers found the body of a woman at the scene.
The initial call was for suspicious circumstances, although police aren't classifying the woman's death as suspicious at this time.
"We don't have any real details at this point," said Halifax police spokesman Const. John MacLeod. "It's still early in the investigation. Our investigators are trying to determine what it is that occurred at the address."
Forensic investigators were on scene and police were canvassing the area. A substantial area was cordoned off with police tape, including a small park nearby.
The woman's name and age have not been released.
It's unclear if she lived in the area or how long she had been dead before she was found.
"At this point, we don't believe there's a risk to the public in relation to this particular incident," MacLeod said.
The woman's body was removed once the medical examiner arrived on scene and has been taken for an autopsy.
"We do have investigators from our special investigative section as well as our forensic identification section who are currently leading the investigation into what occurred at that particular address," MacLeod said.
The large police presence was a bit unnerving for people passing through the neighbourhood.
"It's a bit bizarre, but it's a family area with a school, there's not a lot of suspicious behaviour going on, so it's strange," said Lisa Vineberg. "I've never seen anything like it."
Halifax Regional Police say they will release more information about the incident when it becomes available.
