Slippery roads made for a tricky and dangerous commute in Nova Scotia Thursday morning, as police and emergency crews responded to several accidents across the province.
One man was killed and four people were injured in a five-vehicle collision on Highway 101 near Ellershouse. Police say the eastbound lanes between exits 3 and 4 are closed while they investigate. Traffic is being rerouted to Highway 14.
There was another multi-vehicle accident on Highway 118 near Dartmouth Crossing and a single-vehicle collision near the MacKay Bridge. There is no word on injuries at this time.
Police attended a two-vehicle collision that resulted in traffic tie-ups during rush hour on Barrington Street in Halifax.
In Dartmouth, a garbage truck making its rounds on Berwick Street lost control and slid backwards down a hill, smashing into two parked cars on Sinclair Street.
No one was injured but the cars sustained significant damage.
Halifax Regional Police say they responded to a total of 18 accidents between 6 p.m. Wednesday and noon Thursday.
Police across the province are urging motorists to slow down and allow for extra time to reach their destination.
