Police say speed may have been a contributing factor in a car crash near the MacKay Bridge in Dartmouth that sent two people to hospital.

Police responded to the crash on Highway 111 near the Victoria Road overpass just before 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Police say the 58-year-old male driver lost control of the vehicle as he approached the toll booth.

The car then flipped on its roof and slid 200 metres before striking the median.

Police say a 56-year-old female passenger was thrown from the vehicle and was found lying face up in the middle of the road. She was found conscious, but confused.

The male driver was trapped in the vehicle and needed to be extricated from the car. He was conscious but sustained head injuries in the crash.

Both people were taken to hospital with significant, but non life-threatening injuries.

Dartmouth-bound traffic was not affected by the incident, but the main route to the MacKay Bridge was closed for nearly five hours Wednesday morning, tying up traffic for motorists making the commute into Halifax from Dartmouth.

The bridge has since reopened.

Police are still investigating the crash. They say a decision on charges has yet to be made.
