A Nova Scotia woman is speaking out today after some racially derogatory graffiti was sprayed outside her home.

Chantelle Paris of Eastern Passage says she's worried her family is being targeted by vandals because of the colour of their skin.

Last Tuesday she said she woke up to find offensive language spray painted on the street with arrows pointed at her home

"At first I thought it was a dream, I didn't know how to react," she said. "I panicked, my heart started racing because I didn't know what was going to happen next."

Paris immediately contacted the RCMP.

Cpl. Scott MacRae of the Halifax RCMP says that although the graffiti did contain racial undertones, it does not constitute a hate crime.

"When it boils down to it in court and police, it's mischief, it's damaging property," said MacRae.

Even if the paint was washed away, Paris says she is very nervous and hopes people understand the act was unacceptable.

"I don't know who did it and who would find that funny. It's not funny," she said.

Police say targeted or not this is something they're taking very seriously.
