Hope Swinimer is used to late-night phone calls to her wildlife rescue Hope for Wildlife. So when the phone rang just before 3 a.m. Saturday, she answered.

On the line was an RCMP officer who told her that Cst. Derek Bigger and Auxiliary Cst. Darren Forsyth were on their way to drop off a newborn fawn.

The fawn’s mother was killed after it ran onto the road in front of their RCMP vehicle near Meaghers Grant, N.S. When the officers went to check on the deer, they noticed it was pregnant. They safely delivered the fawn.

“They had it all covered in a blanket,” Swinimer said. She said the officers told her they had delivered babies before, but never a baby deer.

The fawn suffered some minor injuries and will be treated by a veterinarian at Hope for Wildlife. All in all, Swinimer said it is doing well.

“Within three hours, he was standing and drinking from a bottle,” Swinimer said.

The fawn will be rehabilitated at Hope for Wildlife and released into the wild once it is strong enough.
