SUSSEX, N.B. - New Brunswick's mining commissioner has begun hearing from residents living near a potash mine in Penobsquis who blame the mine for a loss of their wells about six years ago.

A group of 26 residents are seeking compensation, arguing that the PotashCorp mine was responsible for sinking land and the loss of 60 water wells.

The mining company initially provided the residents with bottled water, but the provincial government has since installed a municipal water system.

The premiers of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia toured the mine today as part of a two-day meeting involving all four Atlantic premiers.

A scheduled photo opportunity for the news media at the mine was cancelled, with organizers blaming rainy weather.

Some of the residents have planned a rally in front of the hotel in Sussex where the premiers are meeting.
