Schools closed in northwestern N.B., additional weather alerts issued ahead of Thursday storm
Freezing rain has closed schools in parts of New Brunswick Wednesday, while additional weather alerts have been issued ahead of a developing storm that will bring rain and strong winds to the Maritimes Thursday.

There is a two-hour delay for all schools in New Brunswick’s Anglophone North School District due to the freezing rain.
Anglophone School District West says schools in Zone 1 are closed Wednesday. Schools in the Francophone Northwest School District are also closed due to poor road conditions.
In Nova Scotia, buses serving Strait Regional Centre for Education and Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for Education schools are travelling on paved roads only. CSAP also says busses to École NDA in Chéticamp, N.S., are cancelled Wednesday due to high winds.
Freezing rain warnings in New Brunswick
A freezing rain warning is in effect Wednesday morning across western and central New Brunswick. Environment Canada says there is some uncertainty surrounding the duration and intensity of the freezing rain.
“Initially it may fall as ice pellets or freezing drizzle for a period, followed by freezing rain before transitioning to rain,” the warning reads.
A rainfall warning is in effect for western New Brunswick and the Fundy Coast due to an intense, low-pressure system that will track west of the province Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
“This system will give periods of rain, at times heavy. Strong southerly winds gusting to 80 km/h will accompany this system, with gusts up to 90 km/h over some coastal areas,” the warning reads.
A wind warning is in effect for the Fundy Coast and Acadian Peninsula, where winds could reach up to 90 km/h overnight until Thursday morning.
Special weather statements are in effect across eastern areas of New Brunswick, also warning of heavy rain and strong southerly winds Wednesday and into Thursday.
Wind warnings in Nova Scotia
Meanwhile, in Nova Scotia, wind warnings are now in place in Digby, Shelburne and Yarmouth counties. Winds with gusts up to 90 km/h are expected for that part of the province near midnight and into Thursday morning.
A Les Suêtes wind warning is also in effect for Inverness County – Mabou and north. Environment Canada says western Cape Breton will see two Les Suêtes events over the next couple of days.
“Gusts to 110 km/h can be expected to continue until this morning, followed by another event, with gusts exceeding 110 km/h starting early Thursday morning and ending later in the day,” reads Wednesday’s warning.

Marine Atlantic is warning there is the potential for delayed crossings between North Sydney, N.S., and Port aux Basques, N.L., Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
The Confederation Bridge is also warning wind conditions Thursday morning may result in trafic restrictions.
