Nova Scotia’s Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after a man suffered a broken leg during a foot chase in Dartmouth.

SIRT’s director, Ron MacDonald, says Halifax police arrested a middle-aged man around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Walmart in Dartmouth Crossing.

MacDonald says officers were escorting a suspect to a police cruiser when the man took off.

One of the officers ran after him through the parking lot, across the street, through another parking lot and down an embankment leading to another parking lot.

MacDonald says the police officer eventually arrested the man as he laid on the ground with a broken leg. An ambulance was called shortly after the suspect’s arrest.

Police have now turned the case over to SIRT, which is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call SIRT at 902-424-2010.
