HALIFAX - A Justice Department review has concluded that correctional staff followed protocol in their response to a jail fight in Halifax that left an inmate critically injured.

The Nova Scotia government launched the probe after a 49-year-old man fell down a flight of stairs during a fight with another inmate at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility on May 11.

The review says the man was injured at 9:31 p.m. that evening and was taken to hospital just over an hour later after an assessment by health staff at the jail.

It says staff did not notice any conflict between the two inmates before the fight and that staff made security rounds as scheduled.

Thirty-nine-year-old Patrick Shea is charged with aggravated assault, breach of probation and breach of recognizance stemming from the fight.
