HALIFAX -- Some popular Nova Scotia musicians are helping the provincial government remind residents to abide by the COVID-19 guidelines and celebrate safely over the holidays.

The Nova Scotia government tweeted a tongue-in-cheek musical reminder on Friday. The video is made to look like a commercial for a fictitious album called “Nova Scotia 2020: Home for the Entire Holidays.”

It features local musicians covering classic Christmas songs, but with a change in words to include a COVID-19 theme.

Highlights include Halifax band The Town Heroes singing “I Saw Mommy Didn’t Sanitize” -- a parody of the classic “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.” In the rewrite, the band notes that “she forgot her mask at home last night.”

ECMA-nominated performer Adam Baldwin informs Nova Scotians that “Sanitizin’s Stickin Around,” borrowing the tune of “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town.”

SOCAN Award-winning singer Gabrielle Papillon sings about “The Worst Noel,” reminding Nova Scotians to follow the experts’ advice and “limit our social circles and stay six feet away,” over the holidays.

Halifax’s Aquakultre performs “Hark the Hand Sani-tizing” on the piano while reminding residents to “practice social distancing.”

With restrictions on travel and gatherings, Eskasoni First Nation singer Emma Stevens -- known for her popular version of The Beatles’ Blackbird – muses that she may not be home for Christmas. Instead, she may have to gather virtually, singing “I’ll be Zoom for Christmas.”

Like Stevens, all of the artists used video services to submit their videos.

Attached to the tweet is a list of holiday gathering guidelines from the Nova Scotia government and the video ends with this reminder – “not to sound like a broken record, but if we keep our social circles small, hands clean, and follow health advice, we’ll never have to listen to this album again.”
