Wednesday is the most important day of week in the Geston home.

That’s because three-year-old Hiro Getson gets to see his two favourite garbage collectors, Dave and Rudy.

"Rain or shine, he's at the end of the driveway,” says Dave. “We started watching for him, honking the horn for him, getting out, letting him play with the handles. Then we found out it was his birthday."

Last week, Rudy and Dave presented their little buddy with a personalized toy truck, just like theirs.

Hiro’s mother Krystle says the gesture was heartwarming.

"He found one that was the colour of their truck. He went to Michael's and had a lady help him create the stencils and the stickers for the side,” says Krystle. "Put his number on it, his name, their names on the door. You know, people don't do that."

Since Hiro's fascination with garbage trucks began over the summer, he's already collected 18 trucks of his own and says he wants to use his birthday money to buy two more.

“We love seeing the kids out,” says Dave. “I'm from a big family, so I'm used to seeing a lot of kids … so kids are great."

Hiro makes sure his garbage-collecting friends are taken care of over the holidays by baking them cookies and giving them Valentines.

Dave and Rudy always take a few extra minutes out of their day to show the curious boy how their truck operates.

"To sit and actually stop and get on their level and remember their name and make them feel important. You know, there's a reason he loves his garbage truck over all the other ones," says Krystle.

It’s making Wednesday the most important day of the week for the three-year-old boy and the men he looks up to, in their big green truck.
