Police in Saint John say vandals have caused thousands of dollars in damage to a vacant school.

Police say the culprit, or culprits, got into St. Patrick's school through an open window on the back side of the building.

"They smashed out all the glass windows in the doors, a number of cabinets were ripped off the walls, smashed the glass in the cabinets. Toilet fixtures and sinks were torn out of the wall," says Saint John Police Sgt. Charles Breen.

The school was permanently closed in 2014 following the discovery of structural issues.

Police say they will be speaking with nearby residents to see if anyone saw or heard anything.
