MONCTON, N.B. - A New Brunswick man accused of abducting a woman and keeping her captive for almost a month is "a nice guy" who "has a way with women," a tenant who lived in the same rooming house of Romeo Cormier testified Friday.

Nora Thompson was one of the three tenants who rented a room in the basement of a rooming house on 6th Street in Moncton where Cormier lived, a jury heard.

She was not able to attend court because of a medical issue, but a statement from her was read to the jury.

Thompson said that one night in March of last year, she heard a woman's voice coming from Cormier's room. She said the voice, which was whispering, sounded calm, but she couldn't understand what was being said.

Thompson said she believed the woman had just been there that evening and had then left.

"Romeo is a nice guy," she said. "He has a way with women."

Cormier, 63, is charged with abducting a 55-year-old woman as she left work at a Moncton shopping mall in late February 2010. He has pleaded not guilty to kidnapping, forcible confinement, sexual assault, assault with a weapon, theft and uttering death threats.

The woman's identity is protected by a publication ban.

Thompson said she was in her room on March 24, 2010, when Cormier left around noon to go to a food bank.

She said he returned about a half hour later and asked why an outside door leading to the basement was open.

Thompson said Cormier then told her that a girlfriend had been in his room for three weeks and that the girlfriend wanted to leave her husband.

She said Cormier appeared scared and paranoid.

"He knew police were going to come," Thompson said.

Thompson said she wanted to leave, but Cormier insisted that she stay with him until the police arrived.

Brian Caine, another tenant in the basement of the rooming house, also testified Friday. He told the Court of Queen's Bench that Cormier always kept his door closed and was generally quiet, except for one day he came home and loud music was coming from Cormier's room.

Caine said on another day he heard a woman's voice, but couldn't understand what was being said.

The two tenants were the final witnesses for the Crown.

The woman testified earlier in the week that Cormier abducted her at knifepoint on the night of Feb. 26, 2010, forced her to walk to his rooming house and kept her against her will for 26 days.

She said she was sexually assaulted almost everyday until March 26, 2010, when she freed her hands and feet and removed a sock and tape used to gag her while Cormier was out.

The driver of a courier truck testified that the woman, wearing a T-shirt, underwear and socks, ran in front of his vehicle, forcing him to stop, and he took her to a local police station.

The defence will begin its case Monday.
