A worker is dead after he fell from a roof at a Dartmouth construction site on the weekend.

Nova Scotia’s Occupational Health and Safety Division has issued a stop-work order at the site on Burbridge Avenue in the Burnside Industrial Park.

The order has been in effect since Saturday when 58-year-old Merle Weichel fell from the roof to his death.

Halifax Regional Police say they weren’t notified about the accident until 6 p.m. Saturday, about six hours after it happened.

Const. Pierre Bourdages says the person who took the initial 911 call judged it to be a non-police event.

Police didn't inform the media about the death until today.

"Because we did not attend the scene," says Bourdages. "Once we received information about this man passing, the scene had already been cleared. We had nothing to attend to. We did not put a release on this."

There is no word yet on what caused the fall or how long the building site will remain shut down.

The Department of Labour is investigating.
