CTV News Atlantic Reporter

Halifax

Oct. 2023: Heidi Petracek is no longer with CTV Atlantic.

Heidi Petracek is a Halifax-based videojournalist for CTV Atlantic and has brought her naturally inquisitive and engaging personality to radio and television for more than twenty years.

She started her career as a television news reporter in her home province of Saskatchewan, before moving on to work in Calgary, Toronto, Corner Brook, and St. John’s. Over the years, she has worked in both radio and television as a news reporter, host, producer, and writer.

She is a highly-skilled communicator who has interviewed hundreds of people including Academy Award winner Olympia Dukakis, Canadian rocker Kim Mitchell, baseball Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar and Col. Chris Hadfield. Heidi has also interviewed countless people across Canada who simply have compelling personal stories to share, often at difficult points in their lives.

She has reported on many key events in Canada – from federal elections and floods, to the collapse of the Atlantic fishery, the immediate aftermath of the 9-11 attacks, Moncton shootings in 2014 and Hurricane Fiona in 2022.

From 2020 to 2022, Petracek was also instrumental in news coverage of the worst mass shooting in recent Canadian history, in which 22 people, including a pregnant mother, were killed in a gunman’s rampage. Petracek reported on key questions raised by family members of the victims over the RCMP response, communications, and investigation of the massacre, along with their push for a federal inquiry. She then spent most of 2022 covering the Mass Casualty Commission, including the delivery of it’s finally report in March 2023.

Over the years, Heidi has lent her skills as an emcee to fundraisers for Maritime organizations such as The IWK Foundation,  Christmas Daddies, and the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia, to name a few.

Heidi was named “Media Person of the Year” by the Tema Conter Memorial Trust for her coverage on PTSD among first responders in Canada.

When she’s not working, she enjoys kayaking with her husband, playing with her dog and cat, cooking, and taking photos.
