Date advanced for New Brunswick coroner's inquest into police killing of Rodney Levi

A coroner's inquest into the death of an Indigenous man shot dead by police in New Brunswick last year will start nearly a week earlier than scheduled.
New Brunswick's chief coroner said today the inquest into the death of Rodney Levi of the Metepenagiag First Nation, originally scheduled for Oct. 4, will now begin Sept. 28 in Miramichi, N.B.
A coroner and jury will hear evidence to determine the facts surrounding the death that occurred on June 12, 2020, near Miramichi, about 150 kilometres north of Moncton.
Prosecutors decided not to charge the officers following an investigation by Quebec's police watchdog.
A lawyer for Levi's family has said Levi was suffering a mental health crisis on the night he was killed, and that there are questions about whether police were following proper protocols.
The coroner's jury can make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths in the future.
