HALIFAX -- Nova Scotia's transportation minister says he's confident the provincial government will find a credible bidder to remove the wreck of the MV Miner, which has been stranded off Cape Breton for more than two years.
Geoff MacLellan says that's why a request for proposals issued Wednesday lists specific environmental and occupational health and safety requirements that companies must follow.
MacLellan says the goal is to get a company that can tackle what is a difficult job in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
He says the request for proposals, which closes April 23, will require interested bidders to visit the wreck site off the Scatarie Island protected area.
The 223-metre bulk carrier became stranded in September 2011 after a line snapped in rough seas while it was being towed from Montreal to a scrapyard in Turkey.
A New York-based salvage company agreed to remove it, but walked away from the job after voicing frustrations with bureaucratic hurdles.
