FREDERICTON - New Brunswick Liberal Premier Brian Gallant says his member-elect in the riding of Saint John East resigned because of concerns that the job would affect his health and family.
Gary Keating, who won the riding in the Sept. 22 election, announced Tuesday that he was quitting before even being sworn in as a member of the legislature.
Gallant says he respects the decision and won't reveal any details about Keating's health.
The president of the New Brunswick Progressive Conservatives is urging Gallant not to delay in sending voters back to the polls for a byelection in Saint John East.
Jason Stephen says a byelection is needed to give residents in the riding their voice in the legislature.
Gallant says he'd like to have a new member elected before the legislature sits in early December, but he needs to discuss a byelection date with his cabinet.
Keating won the riding by nine votes after the results were confirmed by a judicial recount.
