HEALTH MINISTER WARNS OF SIXTH WAVE
During discussions within the legislature Tuesday, New Brunswick Health Minister Dorothy Shephard said the sixth wave of COVID-19 is on the way, and restrictions could be reinforced if needed.
'We know the sixth wave is coming, we see it now," she said. "But we also know that what's happening in our province is still happening elsewhere."
"We have worked with public health all through COVID. I see no reason why we wouldn't," adds Shephard, in regards to reinstating restrictions.
According to Shephard, the Omicron variant makes up about 35 per cent of New Brunswick's positive cases.
Dr. Jennifer Russell, the province's chief medical officer of health, said the current risk of being exposed to the virus is quite high. However, she adds there has been an increase in people getting their booster dose.
Russell continues to remind New Brunswickers, especially those who are more vulnerable to become ill, including pregnant women, to get their COVID-19 vaccine when eligible.
"We've seen hospitalizations recently among pregnant women and so, we want to make sure that all pregnant women are vaccinated," said Russell.
VACCINE UPDATE
According to the province’s online dashboard, 93 per cent of eligible New Brunswickers have received one dose of vaccine, 87.6 per cent have had two doses and 51.2 per cent have had their booster dose.
