Two dead, four in hospital including child after multi-vehicle crash in Moncton: first responders
The New Brunswick RCMP says two people died in hospital following a multi-vehicle crash in Moncton Sunday night.
Codiac Regional RCMP, along with firefighters and paramedics, responded to a three-vehicle crash on Highway 15 near the Dieppe Boulevard overpass around 5:28 p.m.
“We were told multiple vehicles, multiple injuries,” said Moncton Fire Deputy Chief Keith Guptill.
Police say the driver of the first vehicle, a 32-year-old woman from Moncton, N.B., was taken to hospital where she later died. The two passengers in her vehicle were taken to hospital with what police believed to be minor injuries.
The driver of the second vehicle, a 43-year-old man from Moncton, N.B., was taken to hospital where he later died. Police say the two passengers in his vehicle were taken to hospital with what are believed to be serious injuries.
Guptill said one of the victims was a child but couldn’t confirm their age.
“That child had been sent to the IWK in Halifax,” said Guptill.
Police believe the crash happened when the first car was travelling eastbound in the westbound lane and collided head-on with the second vehicle. Police say a third vehicle was involved, but was left with little damage.
Moncton Fire officials told CTV Atlantic the jaws of life was used to extract two people.
“That is a very tough call for our crews and so what we automatically do is we will kick off our peer support system, critical incident stress,” said Guptill.
“We will have a diffusing, which we already did last night. We had folks off shift come in and talk to their peers so that they’re talking to each other.”
Fire crews say road conditions were dry at the time of the crash.
A section of Highway 15 was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
