PORT AUX BASQUES, N.L. -- Federal fisheries officials say all but three of about 30 white-beaked dolphins that were trapped in ice off southwestern Newfoundland have died.
A Fisheries spokesman says officers visited the site in Cape Ray today and found the carcasses, adding that the remaining dolphins appear to be in poor condition.
The officers say high winds and whiteouts in the area are making the conditions worse for the mammals.
They say the unique geography and currents in the area around Cape Ray form a natural trap for animals when there is heavy ice.
Footage taken by a resident and posted online shows the water tinged red with blood as the dolphins tried to get free.
Such trappings have happened before in the region.
The Fisheries Department says six blue whales were driven ashore by ice in 1987.
