What would you do if you found $13,000 cash on the side of the road?

The answer was easy for one Halifax-area resident.

On Thursday, police say a 28-year-old Spryfield man had been driving along Herring Cove on the way to purchase a tractor when he realized a bag containing $13,000 in cash had fallen out of his vehicle.

The man frantically searched for the bag along the route, but failed to find it.

While an officer was taking the report at the man’s home, police say a Good Samaritan who had found the bag returned it to the Spryfield Community Office.

The man who lost the bag was able to provide a breakdown of the money and was reunited with his lost cash. Police say not a penny had been taken.

Since January, Halifax Regional Police say there have been 38 reports of citizens turning over valuables to the police after finding them around the city.

A number of gifts, credit and debit cards, as well as passports and more than $2,000 in cash have been returned to their rightful owners since the beginning of the year.

On Thursday, CTV News aired a story about a Halifax man whose missing wallet had been mailed to him by an anonymous Good Samaritan who found it on the Beaver Bank Road. Only $5 had been taken from the wallet, to cover the mailing fee, which was explained in a nice note.

Police say anyone who loses a valuable item should file a report at the nearest police station.

If a lost item is turned over to police, they say a commissionaire or an officer will make every attempt to locate the owner and return the property.
