Police say a New Brunswick teen is dead after the car he was travelling in crashed into a tree on Saturday.

District 10 RCMP say it appears two vehicles were racing each other in a residential area on Cyr Road in Baker Brook when the collision occurred.

Police say one of the vehicles lost control, left the road and crashed into a tree in front of a home. Jean-Yves Cyr, 17, of Baker Brook was a passenger in the car and he died from his injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, also a 17-year-old boy from Baker Brook, was seriously injured in the crash. He was airlifted to the Moncton City Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Police say an 18-year-old Verret boy, who was a third passenger in the vehicle, sustained minor injuries in the crash.

Investigators say the three teens were not wearing seatbelts, and high speed is believed to have been a factor in the collision.

Police are still investigating the incident.
