An online fundraising campaign set up to raise money for Shawn Curtis Jack has raised about $22,000.
The Good Samaritans who started the online fundraising campaign are now planning a benefit dance for Jack, which will take place on Aug. 16 at the Sydney Mines Legion.
Jack was brutally beaten behind a grocery store in North Sydney on July 14.
He sustained serious head injuries and was airlifted to a Halifax hospital.
Police say Jack is originally from the Truro area and often camps behind the store during the summer months with his dog, Chico.
Jack’s long-term prognosis remains uncertain.
When he does leave hospital, he will likely go to a rehabilitation facility for physiotherapy. After that, he may be looking at a nursing home or assisted living facility.
A family member plans to travel to Cape Breton sometime later this month to visit Jack's dog and to meet and thank some of the people who have supported Jack in Cape Breton.
Six people have been arrested and charged in connection with the attack.
