The RCMP are investigating after the body of a newborn baby was found outside a church in Mount Albion, P.E.I. on Sunday.

RCMP Cpl. Martin Roy says caretakers at the church discovered the body around 2:30 p.m.

Roy declined to reveal the name of the church and the gender of the child, saying the Mounties are withholding that information as part of their investigation.

Police say they are concerned the woman who delivered the child may be in distress and may need medical attention.

They are asking anyone with information about the baby or the mother to contact them.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine a cause of death.
