SYDNEY, N.S. - A Maritime man believes C. Difficile is to blame for the loss of his mother after she was hospitalized at Cape Breton Regional Hospital due to a stroke.

She was hospitalized in May and the 88-year-old woman was infected with C. difficile three separate times.

Two weeks ago, Brian Young told CTV News he was worried his mother would be next to die from the outbreak at the hospital. She passed away this week.

The Cape Breton District Health Authority says that while the woman did get infected in hospital, it does not believe the infection was the direct cause of her death.

"While C. difficile was not the direct cause, it was a contributing factor to the death of the most recent patient," said Greg Boone, Cape Breton District Health Authority.

Young is not satisfied with the authority's response to the death of his mother.

"They'll kind of coat it in all kinds of sugar, to try and make it a little more acceptable," he said.

Young's mother is the fifth patient to die with C. difficile since the latest outbreak was announced almost a month ago.

The health authority says it has recruited experts from across the province and there haven't been any new cases in 17 days.

Young isn't considering legal action at this time but says once his mother has been buried he may revisit the idea.
