A major street in Cole Harbour, N.S. could be named in honour of hockey superstar Sidney Crosby.
Coun. Lorelei Nicoll has officially put forward a motion that Forest Hills Parkway be renamed Sidney Crosby Parkway, after the local hockey hero.
Halifax Regional Council will discuss the idea at Tuesday’s council meeting.
Crosby’s former hockey coach, Paul Mason, initially raised the idea last week after watching the Pittsburgh Penguins captain hoist the Stanley Cup following the team’s victory on June 12.
He said Forest Hills Parkway is the perfect street to rename in Crosby’s honour because it’s home to many of the rinks in which the NHL star played while growing up in Cole Harbour.
Mason’s proposal quickly gained traction on social media and prompted Hockey Nova Scotia to create an online petition. More than 400 people had signed the petition as of 12 p.m. Monday.
However, renaming the road would break the Halifax Regional Municipality’s policy, which suggestsrenaming a street can only be done when the person being honoured is retired or has fulfilled "25 years or more of volunteer service."
Mason said an exception should be made to celebrate someone who has brought home top honours from the World Juniors, the Olympics and in the NHL by also winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs.
Nicoll said she would see if council would consider making an exception.
